DC Shoes meet Groove Armada

28 07 2009

Groove DCCollaborations are fast becoming the way to create a limited product that gets everybody talking in the world of board sports these days. Sponsored riders are often putting their names to specific styles of boardshorts and sunglasses, and celebrities from the world of music and sports are no stranger to it too. Just look at the brand power of David Beckham for crying out loud. You could stick his name of a bog roll and it would be a guaranteed seller. Brands are cottoning on to the power of endorsement – and the publicity, demand, and ultimately money, that it can generate. That said, I like it. I like something a bit different and unique and often these collaborations provide the answer.

First we had the Billabong Metallica Board shorts, now I introduce……. the Groove Armada DC Shoes. One of my favourite bands/DJ’s meets one of my favourite skate shoe brands. It had to be good…they didn’t dissapoint. They’ve created two distinctive shoes each refelctive of their history. Firstly, the multi coloured Mismatch Volcano utilises the awesome techno colour theme from GA’s merchandise and graphics. The mismatch execution is taken to another level with the left and right shoe being slightly different from one another. Secondly, the Night and Day A-250 combines eye-cathing glow in the dark logos with the smart sophistication of black and white croc embossed leathers that transform in sunlight to reveal a hidden background colour. I gotta say I’m impartial to a bit of croc leather. If DC keep pumping out shoes like this and Groove Armada keep pumping out the tunes like they have been over the last 15 years…..I’m a happy man.

Ski fashion: taking it a bit too far?

20 07 2009

This is a Tall T. Apparently they are all the rage on the slopes at the moment. But come on….this is taking ski clothing a bit too far isn’t it? I’m 23 and certainly not old fashioned but this just isn’t a good look……i mean it makes the guy look like he’s got stumps for legs. What’s the point? To keep your knees warm? Be serious.

Nixon Ceramic 51 30 – Let’s burn a hole in that pocket!

14 07 2009

Nixon 51 30 ltdWant to know what a $10,000 watch looks like? Here it is. Well so Nixon say, it’s not actually on sale, as this is one of 3 custom made 51 30’s for the winners of the Second annual Maloof Money Cup skateboarding event in Orange County, California. According to Nixon’s Marketing Director, “Everybody loves a big payday when you win this event.  The addition of these custom, limited watches gives a little extra something that will be around well after the money has been spent and is a lot easier to carry around than a trophy!” With a 6 hand chronograph, over 2 carats of diamonds on a black, high-polish case featuring a custom engraved caseback, and complete with a combination python snakeskin and hand cut Italian leather band this really is pretty unique. Not bad for a days skateboarding.

Nixon Ceramic 51 30To hell with value for money….some people just wanna go out there and throw there cash around and let every mother lover know about it (p.s not me: I dont have enough). Well for those who do….this brand new Ceramic 51 30 might be to your liking. Unlike the previous one, this bad boy goes on general release in the autumn, but somehow I think they’ll remain pretty exclusive. That might have something to do with the £2,000 price label slinking off the side of it. But look at it……yes, keep looking……no, really look…. i mean, this thing is the definition of Big Pimpin style. Its absolutely dripping in it. It’s gonna turn heads, and its gonna drop jaws – but that’s the point. If you’ve got £2,000 to spare and a fairly sizeable bicep to boot (this thing aint light) and you want people to know about it – you can’t go far wrong with the Nixon Ceramic 51 30.

Why are Oakley sunglasses so great?

14 07 2009

It’s no secret that Oakley claim to be the best sunglasses brand on the planet. But what makes them so confident with such a large statement? Making up their own unique concepts such as O Matter, Plutonium and Unobtanium there surely has to be some substance behind all this bolshy style. Worn by sports stars and celebrities the world over, something tells me they aren’t making false promises about the best clairty and most indestructable lenses. If you don’t believe me, then check out this press release video from Oakley by Brian Shelton. Then you will believe me.

Extreme Skiing Madness

13 07 2009

Now we all know skiing and snowboarding can get the adrenalin pumping in an instant. There’s nothing better to get the endorphins flowing than hurtling down an open coulouir of white powder on crisp sunny day……..but this is just silly. Take a look at this promo video that Oakley have put together of some of the best extreme skiing I’ve ever seen. I can only assume the criteria for attempting some of the off piste stuff is 1) be a good skier and 2) be clinically insane. Check it out.

The Von Zipper Goggles Wow Factor

13 07 2009

It may only be the middle of July, but as the retail world is slowly going into sale this means only one thing….new winter product is already starting to hit the shelves. I’ve just caught a glimpse of some of the new Von Zipper goggles for winter 09/10 and these puppies are swweeeeeett. The goggles are fast becoming the ultimate mountain accessory and by the look of it, with a pair of these strapped to your bonnet you’ll never be too far away from where the party’s at. Only those cheeky Americans can can their hands on them at the moment….but you’ll be able to get your grubby mitts on them soon when they hit European shores in the autumn!

What do you get if you combine a giant of the clothing world with a giant of the music world?……some killer Metallica inspired boardshorts! After the success of a first collaboration, Billabong and Metallica have teamed up once again to premiere this “Death Magnetic” boardshort, featuring imagery from the “Death Magnetic” album in an all over print. Billabong have said the style “emulates the bands ‘thrashy riffs’ and ‘tight patterns’ while maintaining their hard-core appearance.” The boardies are available in two colour ways, and a limited edition Metallica jersey is also set to be released like the one bassist Robert Trujillo wears on stage. With their recent induction into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and “Death Magnetic” being the band’s fifth consecutive album to reach #1, Metallica has proven that they are anything BUT past their prime. So get some…live fast…and play hard.

The Rubber Player – metal who?

23 06 2009

Rubber player banner

Now we all know rubber is the new metal. In the last year there has been a huge movement to rubber accessories – and nowhere has that been more effective than the watch market. Never one to miss a trick, Nixon have been causing quite alot of hype this year by releasing a rubber version of their iconic player design – diamond included. The reason for all the hype, besides the Player being damn cool, was that they released one colour a month, unannouced, and sent only 4 out to each participating retailer. To add to this, they were not released for sale online – besides the nixon offcial website – making them even more exclusive and unique.

Last week the fourth and final colour was released and we now have the final line-up: blue, red, green and yellow (yes, it was fairly predictable). When they first came out, I really wasn’t sure about these at all, especially at 170 notes which is more than the metal version - but the more I look at them, the more they are growing on me, which is dangerous, because I get the feeling that if I run into one in a shop somewhere my bank balance might take a beating.

Check out the nixon website www.nixonnow.com and decide for yourself.
